3 Months of Samsung Galaxy S7 edge

5) Build quality

I don’t like using big and heavy cases when I buy expensive flagship phones. Companies like Samsung and Apple spend millions of dollars in R&D and production, just on making their phones marginally slimmer, lighter and stronger each year so it feels like such a waste to clothe a beautiful phone in an ugly and heavy wrapper.

My phones take moderate abuse and the occasional tumble without the protection of bulky cases, as did the S7 edge.

The Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back of the phone can be a fingerprint magnet but it proved to be extremely strong and durable in day to day use. The glass is almost impossible to scratch and very hard to break.

Not surprisingly, the current fascination with aluminum in the smartphone industry is the only weakness. The aluminium metal frame picks up some dents and scratches if you drop the phone.

So if you like the idea of using a phone without a case and can live with a scratch or two along the way, you can use the S7 edge without a case. It won’t shatter into pieces or lose functionality within the realms of reasonable use.

The other strength of the phone is that it is IP57 – waterproof and dust resistant.

Waterproof phones have been around for a few years but this was my first experience with one.

Given the camera quality on the S7 edge, you don’t feel like leaving it behind when you hit the pool or the beach and you don’t have to! Another good reason why you will capture more beautiful moments of your life than you probably did before.

I’ve (deliberately) dropped the phone in the shallow end of the pool and taken pictures there on a sunny day and it held up just fine. The touch of the screen doesn’t work underwater and acts up a little if it’s too wet, but overall, there is nothing stopping you from using it.

This is the sort of feature you don’t really think you need, until someone gives it to you. Then it’s hard to go back to a normal phone.

I ride a bike and if I ever get caught in the rain, my phone getting spoilt is the last thing I need to worry about.

The S7 Edge looks and feels expensive. It is supported by a build quality that allows you to use the phone in most conditions without layering it with an ugly case.

If however, you like playing it safe and prefer phone covers, Samsung phones always have excellent support for accessories, both official and third party.

Is it the right phone for you?

    1. Thanks buddy! You were the one who gave me the idea to write it so I am glad you liked it. I tried restricting this post to limited aspects of the phone that are different to its competitors. But if you have any other specific questions about the phone before you buy it, let me know, I’ll be happy to help. Cheers!
